October doctors' strike gains backing over statute

Spain's family doctors' society has backed the doctors' strike planned for 28 October, demanding a separate employment statute for the profession. José Polo, president of the Spanish Society of Primary Care Doctors, made the call in Madrid on 15 September. He said doctors have a distinct role as clinical leaders within the health system.

Semergen, the society representing primary-care doctors, is supporting mobilisation for a single framework statute specifically for doctors. Polo also pointed to budget shortfalls and staff shortages in primary care, saying family doctors' importance still has to be argued for loudly.

Ceuta staff face 24-hour shifts

Polo also backed colleagues in Ceuta, where the CESMSATSE union has called a strike for 24 September over pressure on health services linked to the migration crisis. He said the autonomous city urgently needs more staff.

There can be no claim of normality, he said, while professionals work for up to 24 hours without a break. Semergen said it stands with the staff and supports their demands, insisting the situation cannot continue.

Congress brings 4,500 professionals to Santiago

Semergen will hold its 48th national congress in Santiago de Compostela from 7 to 10 October. More than 4,500 professionals are expected for 182 scientific events on the future of primary care.

The programme includes genomics, artificial intelligence, cancer-survivor follow-up, obesity, suicide prevention and antibiotic resistance. Organisers have received nearly 3,400 scientific submissions for the event.
