Spain doctors’ strike: new union pushes for change
A new doctors’ union in Spain is pushing for an indefinite strike from 28 October: it wants the Health Ministry to listen to doctors’ demands. The association Médicos Unidos por sus Derechos says it has created Sindicato Médicos Unidos to campaign for separate employment rules for doctors.
The association blames the current Estatuto Marco, the framework governing their working conditions, for driving doctors out of the public health system. It says doctors have too little say in negotiations with the authorities, while other healthcare professions help decide their terms. It also links the shortage of doctors to poorer patient care.
The union wants doctors to negotiate their conditions directly with the authorities. It says better terms could help keep them in the public system, and it wants talks about the future of the profession and public healthcare. Its statement gives no details of how the planned strike would affect patient care.
