Spain's 28 October doctors' strike hangs in balance

Spain’s doctors may not go ahead with an indefinite strike due to start on 28 October: a general election has put the law they oppose on hold. The Spanish Confederation of Medical Unions (CESM) will meet its executive committee and the unions on the strike committee to decide whether to press ahead or call it off. CESM sources told Europa Press in Madrid on Monday, 5 October, that a decision could come in the next few days.

CESM announced the strike last week alongside the Medical Union of the Basque Country and the Andalusian Medical Union. They oppose the proposed Framework Statute and want separate rules for doctors and other medical professionals.

But dissolving Spain’s parliament ends bills still going through it. The Framework Statute reform is now on hold and would have to start again once a new government is formed.
