Spain doctors' strike called for 28 October, no end set

Spain’s public-health doctors are set to strike from 28 October, with no end date fixed: their unions have formally called a walkout over stalled talks on working conditions. The Spanish Confederation of Medical Unions filed the strike notice on Monday, 28 September 2026. The walkout is due to start at midnight on 28 October and continue until it is formally called off.

The unions say talks with Spain’s Health Ministry have made no progress. They also object to a proposed change to the Estatuto Marco, the framework rules that govern doctors’ working conditions, being sent to parliament without their main demands. According to the confederation, the ministry has not called the strike committee back to talks since June, despite months of protests and earlier stoppages.

Doctors’ unions in the Basque Country and Andalusia are joining the call and will sit on the strike committee. The unions are also urging doctors in training and medical professionals at other centres linked to the public system to take part.

The unions say the strike can still be avoided if the Health Ministry resumes negotiations. They want parliamentary groups to reject the proposal in its current form and send it back to the ministry for a new draft agreed with doctors. The announcement does not say what a walkout would mean for patients.
