In Palma, Mallorca, a 38-year-old man zigzags along the road to Valldemossa with a damaged tyre at about 18.15 on Sunday. Another driver stops him, but he sets off again. Minutes later, Palma Local Police pull him over on the Ma-20 near Ocimax, where his front tyre is completely destroyed.

A warning he ignores

The witness spotted the car near the University of the Balearic Islands and noticed a strong smell of burning plastic. He tried signalling to the driver, then overtook him and made him stop. Seeing that the man appeared drunk, he urged him not to drive on.

The driver instead urinated in the road and joined the Ma-20 from the Ocimax roundabout, heading towards s'Arenal. The witness stayed on the phone to police, updating them on the car’s location.

Police stop the car

Officers stopped the car in the right-hand lane a few minutes later. A breath test returned 0.98 mg/l of exhaled air — nearly four times the permitted limit and above the threshold for a criminal offence, police said.

Officers told the man they would report him on suspicion of a road-safety offence. A municipal tow truck took the car to the Riera pound, and police sent the case papers to the duty investigation section of the Court of Instance.
