Palma drink-driver nearly five times legal limit
Palma, Mallorca: A 29-year-old British driver zigzags and brakes sharply on Thursday night before police record a breath-alcohol reading almost five times the legal limit. Another motorist alerts a Palma Local Police patrol near number 180 on Calle Aragón after seeing the car heading from the Avenidas towards Playa de Palma, braking and accelerating suddenly.
Officers spot the car joining the Vía de Cintura. They draw alongside near the Estadio Balear and direct the driver back to Calle Aragón, where they stop the car in a safe place.
As they speak to him, officers notice clear signs that he has been drinking. He repeatedly switches on his indicators for no apparent reason and admits he has had alcohol. His breath tests show 1.15 milligrams per litre of breath, then 1.25 milligrams per litre — nearly five times the legal limit and above the threshold for a criminal offence.
Police tell the driver he is under investigation for a suspected road-safety offence. They have sent the case file to the duty investigating section of the Court of First Instance.
