Mallorca driver blocks lane after suspected drug reaction
Mallorca: A 52-year-old driver ends up with his car across a bend on Avenida del Cid in Son Ferriol, Palma, at 13.30 on Tuesday, blocking a lane. A motorcyclist riding behind him tells police she saw the car zigzag along the road before it stopped. Several callers alert Palma Local Police.
People who approach the car find the driver hitting his chest and face. They pull him out and hold him on the road to stop him hurting himself. When officers arrive, he is still shouting and strikes his head against the pavement. They restrain him for his safety.
The driver’s partner tells police they had taken drugs in Son Banya, Palma, and that he had suffered a sudden reaction while driving. She says he had not attacked her or anyone else.
Ambulance medics say his condition is consistent with severe intoxication by mind-altering substances. They take him to Son Llàtzer University Hospital. The medical emergency prevents police from testing him for alcohol or drugs at the scene, so they seek court permission for toxicology tests at the hospital.
Police inform the driver that they are investigating him on suspicion of a road safety offence, but do not arrest him. They leave the car with his partner and send the case papers to the duty investigating section of the Court of Instance.
