Palma driving without a licence pair face fast-track court

Palma police stopped a car driven by a 21-year-old man who had never held a driving licence. His 21-year-old partner, who owns the car, later told officers she knew this and had handed him the keys. Both Spaniards now face a fast-track hearing at the duty investigating section of the Tribunal de Instancia.

Officers stopped the vehicle at 16.35 on 10 September near Pasaje de Maneu and Calle del Sindicat in Palma. They had seen two men putting a crashed motorbike into its boot, prompting them to carry out checks.

The driver initially gave false verbal details about his identity. When officers asked for physical documentation, he showed a photograph of his identity document on his phone. Police issued an administrative penalty under the Public Security Protection Act.

A police database check found that he had never obtained a driving licence. Officers removed the uninsured motorbike from the street, while a tow truck took the car to the municipal Sa Riera depot.

Police are treating the woman as an unarrested suspect on suspicion of necessary cooperation in an offence against road safety. Neither of the pair has a police record, according to Palma Local Police.
