Mallorca students fly drones over Alcúdia solar park

Students from Inca will fly drones above the Biniatria solar park in Alcúdia, using cameras to check photovoltaic panels for possible trouble spots. Endesa announced the scheme on Friday after signing an agreement with the Integrated Vocational Training Centre (CIFP) Pau Casesnoves. It gives students on the higher-level Renewable Energy course practical work at an operating solar plant.

The drones carry thermal-imaging and photogrammetry cameras. Thermal flights can reveal possible anomalies or hot spots in the panels, while photogrammetry will create topographic models and orthophotomosaics of the site. Endesa says the data can help make operation and maintenance more efficient, safer and more predictive.

The project will also provide information for preventative maintenance at Biniatria. CIFP Pau Casesnoves is part of the state network of vocational training centres of excellence run by the Ministry of Education, Vocational Training and Sport, where it serves as a reference centre for renewable energy.
