Drug retreat raid in Sagunt finds Balearic clients
A drug retreat in Sagunt, in Spain’s Valencia region, draws clients from the Balearic Islands: the Civil Guard finds them at a chalet during a search on 25 September. Investigators say the retreat gave people psychoactive substances while promising to cure illnesses. Police arrest the man they believe ran it and later place a woman linked to the operation under investigation.
Retreat places cost up to 500 euros
The inquiry began with an online advert for retreats linked to psychology and therapy. Places cost up to 500 euros, according to investigators. They say the organisers gave clients substances including ayahuasca, hallucinogenic mushrooms and psilocybin, but had no relevant health qualifications. The centre also lacked permission to operate.
The retreat’s website described vomiting and diarrhoea as signs of improvement and made claims about cancer. Police say those claims were false.
Mushrooms and patient records seized
During the search, officers seized mushrooms with possible hallucinogenic effects, a capsule-making machine, cash and patient records. Many of the substances found have yet to be analysed. Officers also found clients from Tarragona, Barcelona and Bizkaia at the chalet.
The man and woman face allegations involving public health offences, practising without qualifications and fraud. Investigators have sent the case files to a court in Sagunt.
