Balearic eco-buoys: MPs block hearing on ports chief
Palma, 14 October 2026: Balearic MPs block a hearing on eco-buoy fields, leaving a request to question the ports chief about their management unanswered. A Balearic Parliament committee rejects the Socialists’ (PSIB) bid to call PortsIB director general Antoni Mercant to explain how the fields are managed and their current situation. People’s Party (PP) members and MPs Xisco Cardona and Llorenç Córdoba vote against it.
The committee also rejects most of a Unidas Podemos proposal on packaging waste. It votes down a call for Balearic municipalities and groups of municipalities that do not yet collect household rubbish door to door to start doing so. It also refuses to ask the Balearic government to complete a deposit-and-return project for single-use packaging begun on Formentera.
One proposal passes: a call for Spain’s central government to introduce a packaging deposit-and-return system, known as SDDR, before the end of 2026. Article 47 of the royal decree on packaging and packaging waste provides for it.
