Eivissa capital fund: PSOE seeks 10 million euros

Eivissa Town Hall could see its capital-city funding rise from 4 million to at least 10 million euros a year under a PSOE proposal made on Friday, 11 September. The party also wants the council to be able to raise the tourist tax on cruise ships. The plans have been lodged as amendments in the Parliament of the Balearic Islands.

The amendments are part of the ongoing changes to Palma’s capital-city law. PSOE says Eivissa should use the process to secure more funding rather than be left behind.

A larger annual fund

PSOE wants Article 12 of Eivissa’s capital-city law changed after seven years in force. Elena López, the party’s spokesperson on the Council of Eivissa, said there had now been enough time to assess the law’s effect on the city and put forward improvements.

Under the proposal, the Balearic Government would provide at least 7.5 million euros a year and the Council of Eivissa 2.5 million euros. That would leave the regional government paying 75 per cent of the minimum 10 million euros total.

Cruise tax proposal

The party also wants Eivissa Town Hall to decide whether to increase the sustainable tourism tax paid by cruise ships. Socialist MP Pilar Costa said the measure would give cities specific resources to deal with the pressures created by this kind of tourism.

PSOE says the update should form part of better local funding, giving Eivissa the means to meet its needs as the island’s capital. It also accused the Council of Eivissa of failing in recent years to do enough to defend and increase the fund.
