Ibiza suspect jumps from cliff, police arrest him at sea

A burglary suspect jumped from a cliff into the sea off Eivissa, Ibiza, on Tuesday as National Police officers closed in. He swam about 150 metres from shore before officers reached him in a rescue boat from the lifeguard post at Figueretes beach and arrested him.

Several neighbours had alerted police to a man inside a home, the Balearic Islands police headquarters said. Witnesses told officers he had moved between properties by climbing across balconies.

Police found a man matching the description but said he ignored an order to stop and ran away. As officers cornered him, he climbed down the cliff and leapt into the water.

Officers kept him in sight as he moved away from the coast and asked for a boat because of the risk to his safety. One officer removed part of his uniform, entered the water and told him to return to land, but he did not comply.

The suspect at one point headed towards an anchored boat, then turned away after seeing people on board. The rescue craft from Figueretes beach eventually brought officers to him.

Once back on land, police found he was wanted as a suspect in three burglary cases and one alleged unlawful entry into a home. Police said the three burglary allegations involve climbing buildings, searching homes for valuables and taking jewellery and cash.
