Eivissa potholes spark row over London tourism pitch

Potholes in Eivissa, on the island of Ibiza: the city’s Socialists accuse the council of neglecting its streets and heritage while its tourism councillor promotes it at a London travel fair. On 4 November 2026, the PSOE called on the council to care for the places it wants to promote abroad. Tourism councillor Rubén Sousa is attending the World Travel Market in London.

The PSOE says that, after three years under the conservative Partido Popular, public spaces still lack proper cleaning and maintenance. It points to potholes and parts of the city’s bastions being used to park motorcycles. The party also cites photographs of tourist areas and public complaints from residents and businesses.

Building work has added to the dispute. According to the PSOE, unfinished works at the start of the season kept some businesses from opening, and new works began before summer was over.

The party warns of a clash between promoting tourism and nightlife and residents’ wish to live in peace. It wants the council to listen to neighbours, look after public spaces and support the small businesses that help sustain tourism throughout the season.
