In Eivissa, Ibiza, tenants seeking rent aid could receive it sooner after approval. Eivissa City Council is set to approve new rules on Monday that move checks on paid rent to an earlier stage. The council says it wants to get help to residents who need it faster.

Prove rent payments before approval

Applicants will have to show which monthly rent payments they have made while their application is being processed. The council can then check that they meet the rules before deciding whether to award the aid. Once approved, the money can go straight to their bank account, without a later check on rent payments holding it up.

Applications will be judged against set criteria, rather than competing with one another for a place in a ranking.

Who can qualify

Applicants must have been registered as living in Eivissa for a minimum period set by each call for applications. They also need a rental contract for their main home in the municipality and must meet limits on income and monthly rent. The aid cannot cover more than 70 per cent of proven rent costs; each call will set the exact amount.

The rules also allow priority for groups including large or single-parent families, households with someone who has a disability or needs care, and people affected by violence against women or domestic violence. If a call allows it, the council can move unused money between its rent aid schemes.
