On Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, parties have until midnight on Monday, 26 October, to file lists for the 29 November election to Congress and the Senate. The deadline also applies to the Balearic alliance of Més and Frente Amplio, which can submit its candidates to the provincial electoral board. The filing window opens on Wednesday, 21 October.

What happens after the deadline

The lists will appear in Spain’s official state gazette on Wednesday, 28 October, but they will not yet be final. Provincial electoral boards then have two days to flag problems. Parties have 48 hours from being notified to put them right.

The boards have until Monday, 2 November, to confirm the candidates. The confirmed lists will appear in the gazette the following day.

New rules for candidates

For the first time in a general election, lists for Congress must alternate between women and men. The rule also applies to Senate candidates when they are grouped on a list.

Parties and coalitions that won no seat in either chamber at the previous general election must collect signatures from at least 0.1% of registered voters in each constituency where they stand. For groups formed by voters, the threshold is 1%.
