Balearic election post: 504 sought, only 76 contracts
On Mallorca, in Spain’s Balearic Islands, election mail is heading for a squeeze: Correos has just 76 support contracts in place, while a union wants a total of 504 support staff across the islands. Spain holds a general election on 29 November, bringing millions of extra postal items just as Black Friday and the Christmas shopping season begin. The CCOO union made its demand to the Spanish government and Correos president Pedro Saura on Thursday, 5 November.
Votes, notices and Black Friday
Post offices will handle postal vote applications and take in ballots. Sorting centres will process extra election material, while delivery teams will distribute census cards, election notices and postal voting papers. Correos must also collect and safeguard votes. The work is subject to strict legal deadlines and requirements for security and tracking.
Union warns of longer shifts
CCOO says Correos has lost 186 posts across the Balearic Islands in the past three years. It warns that, without enough help, staff could face longer hours and heavier workloads.
The union wants support in post offices, sorting centres, logistics and delivery, as well as cover for absent staff. It also wants part-time staff who request it to be offered longer hours, so election deadlines can be met without worsening working conditions.
