Palma’s 57 electric buses: €12m funding stays put

Palma is set to renew its municipal bus fleet with 57 zero-emission electric buses, up from the 16 first planned. The Balearic Government Council approved the change on Friday, 18 September 2026. The project belongs to Palma’s municipal transport company, EMT Palma, and keeps its €12 million grant from the Sustainable Tourism Tax, known as ITS.

The original plan covered eight 12-metre buses and eight 18-metre buses. It now provides for 23 buses measuring 12 metres and 34 measuring 18 metres.

The larger order does not increase the ITS grant. The government said the expansion is possible because the project uses co-financing from European funds and the contract price per vehicle came in below the initial budget.

The change leaves the project’s goals unchanged: cutting emissions and improving mobility in Palma.
