300+ Palma pupils learn about new electric buses

More than 300 pre-school and primary pupils explored Palma’s new electric buses on Friday at a school mobility day in Nou Llevant. Four schools took part in the event organised by the municipal bus company EMT. The children learned how to behave on public transport and practised finding their route to school on a bus network map.

Palma City Council said the activities also introduced different forms of transport and the part each plays in urban travel. Pupils from CEIP Joan Miró, CEIP La Soledad, CEIP Camilo José Cela and Colegio San Francisco de Asís took part.

New faces for the electric fleet

The children also met Byel and Cítara, two new characters in EMT’s educational project that represent the electric bus models recently added to the fleet.

Mobility councillor Toni Deudero and EMT manager Juanjo Elías handed each of the four schools a diploma recognising it as a centre committed to eco-mobility.

57 electric buses already added

EMT has brought 57 zero-emission electric buses into service: 23 12-metre BYD vehicles and 34 articulated 18-metre Mercedes eCitaro buses.

They form part of a fleet-renewal plan covering up to 113 zero-emission vehicles, with investment of more than €98 million. EMT expects 11 more articulated Irizar buses at the start of 2027, funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

The wider renewal has been financed through Next Generation and Feder funds, contributions from the Sustainable Tourism Tax, Palma City Council, known as Cort, and EMT’s own funds.
