Mallorca puts electric cars and fire drill on show

Mallorca’s third Sustainable Mobility Day brought electric cars, a mock vehicle-fire drill and a road-safety circuit to Palma on Saturday. The Consell de Mallorca, the island council, organised the family activities. Fernando Rubio, councillor for Territory, Mobility and Infrastructure, attended alongside the councillor for Business, Self-employed Workers and Energy.

Children, electric cars and rescue training

Children used inflatable play equipment and tested their riding skills on the road-safety circuit with instructors from the Cycling Federation. The Association of Electric Vehicles of Mallorca, Auve, displayed electric cars and explained this form of sustainable transport.

Mallorca Fire Service demonstrated how to respond if a vehicle catches fire. Its search dog unit also showed how people are located and rescued.

The Mallorca Institute of Social Affairs, IMAS, displayed advice on making school surroundings safe and healthy. In the Mou-te workshop, children drew their vision of the future of mobility in Palma, while Eco Rallye Mallorca screened images of electric vehicles from its events. Melib, the Balearic Government’s public charging network, ran a workshop on charging electric cars and its charging points across Mallorca.

26 civic routes and 46 car parks planned

Rubio said the Consell has promoted 26 civic routes, involving about €45 million of investment across 60 kilometres. The Park-and-Ride Car Park Plan would create 46 sites with more than 7,000 spaces near public transport stations in Mallorca’s towns.
