The German company did business with the three traders, who worked in the same sector. Prosecutors say the accused learnt in November 2019 that the traders owed the company money. How they found out remains unclear, and others may have helped.

According to the prosecution, the men took over the company’s email account on three occasions and asked the traders to pay €70,000, €100,000 and €150,000. The traders sent the money to accounts controlled by the accused, who then withdrew it.

Prosecutors allege three counts of computer fraud. They seek jail terms of three years, four years and five and a half years, fines totalling €9,600 and repayment of the €320,000. They cite a 2018 conviction for document forgery as an aggravating factor for the man facing the longest proposed sentence.
