Seven Ciutadella shops join Balearic heritage list

Seven shops in Ciutadella, Menorca, received Emblemàtics Balears plaques on Monday, 21 September. Silvia Delgado, manager of the Balearic Regional Development Agency, presented the awards alongside Ciutadella mayor Maria Jesús Bagur. The additions lift the town’s catalogue to 21 businesses.

The Emblemàtics Balears scheme highlights traditional local shops with a history in their community and is intended to support nearby trade.

The new names are food shop Ca na Maria - 1945; shoe seller Esparteria i Sabateria Can Magí; bakery and patisserie Forn Curniola; Electricidad Marqués; furniture and Menorcan-chair maker Ca n'Anglada - Coca Rossa; Gelateria de Menorca; and Mercería Casasnovas.

Delgado praised the generations who have kept these businesses going over the years. She said the catalogue grows as further shops are added.

Municipal councils identify businesses that meet the scheme’s requirements, using a guide prepared by the Balearic Regional Development Agency. A shop can qualify as rooted in the area through a distinctive product or trade, as historic after more than 75 years in business — or exceptionally more than 50 — and as heritage if it retains notable features inside or outside along with an intangible value. Businesses meeting all three categories are classed as emblematic.

Across the Balearics, 34 municipalities now take part, with 412 listed businesses. Menorca has 71 Emblemàtics in five municipalities: 21 in Ciutadella, 29 in Maó, 10 in Ferreries, seven in Es Mercadal and four in Alaior.
