Balearic Parliament blocks empty-home inspectors

Plans to send local inspectors to find empty homes for Lloguer Segur have been voted down by the Balearic Parliament on 11 September. The officers would have identified vacant properties and checked their condition before they could be considered for the programme. The proposal came from MÉS per Mallorca and was defended by its deputy Ferran Rosa.

PP, Vox and the Mixed Group cast nine votes against the motion. PSIB and MÉS per Mallorca supplied the five votes in favour.

The rejected plan also linked renovation support to social renting. Grants, subsidised loans or tax deductions would have been available only if homes were let at social rents for at least five years.

It also proposed a housing observatory to establish the real number of empty homes. With data-protection safeguards, it would have combined council records on water use, ownership, registration and property condition.

The same committee approved hearings for José Javier Sanz, president of the Balearic Islands Port Authority, on the proposed urban planning order for the port of Palma. Rafael Tur, spokesperson for the Water Alliance, will also appear to set out the group's work priorities and discuss possible agreements for a water pact.
