Palma, Mallorca: Just 3% of promised Balearic energy-price aid has been paid, Socialist politician Rosario Sánchez says. On 16 October, she accused regional president Marga Prohens of failing to pay out the full package six months after approving it.

Sánchez, deputy leader of the Balearic Socialist Party, says her figure reflects what transport firms, farmers, fishers and other intended recipients have reported. She says the regional aid was agreed in response to price rises linked to the war in Iran.

Sánchez also welcomed a separate measure from Spain’s government. The standing committee of the Congress of Deputies has ratified a decree offering tax relief on fuel. According to the Balearic Socialist Party, it will cut petrol prices, freeze electricity and gas prices, and provide aid to fishers, farmers and transport firms. The aim is to stop higher costs feeding through to grocery bills. Sánchez says companies receiving the aid cannot lay off staff.
