Ibiza beach: 7-tonne engine lifted from swim zone

A 7-tonne engine has been lifted from the swimming area at Es Pouet beach in Sant Antoni de Portmany, Ibiza. It was lying on the seabed beside the line of marker buoys that separates the bathing area. Sant Antoni council said the object was found in August during coastal inspection and maintenance work.

Its size and weight led the council to organise the operation with Ports IB, a specialist company and the municipal lifeguard service. A heavy-duty crane was needed to bring it ashore, where it was found to weigh about 7,000 kilograms.

The council said the underwater clearance forms part of its regular work to clean, maintain and preserve bathing areas. It is also linked to the environmental quality certifications held by Sant Antoni’s beaches, ISO 14001 and EMAS, which require monitoring, control and continual improvement of environmental management.
