Enric Mas wins La Vuelta as Mallorca makes history

Mallorca cyclist Enric Mas has won La Vuelta a España in Granada on 13 September, becoming the first Mallorcan rider to take the title. Balearic Government president Marga Prohens and Congress president Francina Armengol hailed the victory.

Prohens said Spain has a La Vuelta champion again after 12 years, while Mallorca has its first winner of the race. She praised Mas’ spirit, enthusiasm and determination throughout the competition.

The Balearic Government’s tourism, culture and sports minister, Jaume Bauzá, travelled to Granada on Sunday to join Mas on the day of his victory. Prohens told the cyclist that Mallorca was waiting to welcome him home for a celebration.

Armengol said the win came from talent, persistence and many hours of work. For Mallorca, she said, it was a day to celebrate the island’s cycling and sport.
