Palma cuts equality workshops as 69.60% report bias

School pupils in Palma, Mallorca, will again have no equality workshops in the city’s education programme this academic year, according to Ben Amics. The LGTBI group said on Thursday, 17 September, that Palma City Council had removed the sessions for a second consecutive year. It has called for the programme to be brought back.

Ben Amics says the move is a political choice that gives ground to hate rhetoric from the far right. The removed workshops covered equality, preventing gender-based violence and child sexual abuse, and raising awareness of LGTBI-phobia.

The group says relationship and sex education built on human rights, alongside teaching about diversity and equality, is fundamental in schools. It also points to the Balearics as one of Spain’s regions with high rates of school bullying and suicidal thoughts.

According to Palma’s latest LGTBI diagnosis, 69.60% of LGTBI people in the city have experienced discrimination. Ben Amics has urged equality councillor Lourdes Roca to resume the equality programme within Palma Educa.
