Vox attacks Ciutadella Es Born pedestrian plan

Vox says the pedestrian-only scheme at Es Born in Ciutadella, Menorca, has left the town facing fresh costs and legal uncertainty. On 17 September, the party’s Ciutadella coordinator Pedro Marqués accused the town hall of mishandling the project. He said work to restore the square to its previous state could now be needed.

Marqués said the process had become a “soap opera”, blaming what he called the governing team’s haste, arrogance and lack of political ability. He alleged that the pedestrianisation had failed to meet rules which the council itself requires others to follow.

He also criticised the council’s response after a court ruling, saying it had neither admitted its error nor reached an agreement with affected businesses. Marqués said the dispute had set neighbours, traders and business owners against one another instead of bringing them together around a solution.

Vox supports making Es Born a pedestrian square, Marqués said, but insists it must be done legally and with broad agreement. The party wants the council to draw up a full redesign with political groups, traders, businesses, neighbours and other members of the public.

Its proposed plan would improve the square’s appearance and use, add central parking areas and make access to Ciutadella town centre easier. Marqués said every legal procedure and requirement must be followed.

He warned that the bill for the original work could be followed by restoration costs, legal expenses from the court case and possible claims from businesses over alleged losses. Marqués also blamed former mayor Llorenç Ferrer and current mayor María Jesús Bagur for what he described as a failure to seek dialogue and agreement.
