Es Castell vocational centre gets fast-track status

A new vocational training centre in Es Castell, Menorca, has been given fast-track status by the Balearic Government. The decision, taken on Friday 25 September, is intended to speed up administrative procedures for a project seen as a priority for expanding education and vocational training on the island.

The centre will stand on a 6,063-square-metre plot at Plaça de s’Explanada, land owned by the Balearic Islands. The government has also designated the site as public educational land.

The plan combines a full refurbishment of the former Conde de Cifuentes barracks with a new building linked to it by a walkway. The new block will house the workshops and services of the Integrated Vocational Training Centre, known as a CIFP. Administration, careers guidance and teaching rooms will be based in the historic building.

With 5,564 square metres of built space, the centre is planned to include multi-purpose classrooms, computer rooms and areas for practical training. The government says the project will create a modern educational facility geared to labour-market demand while restoring a heritage building.

For students on Menorca, the wider course offer is meant to reduce the need to leave the island to study certain vocational qualifications.
