Es Mercadal: six shops gain heritage listings

Six businesses in Es Mercadal, Menorca, joined the Emblemàtics Balears scheme on 16 September 2026, taking the town’s total to seven. The programme highlights local shops with deep roots or a distinctive legacy. Pastisseria Can Pons had been Es Mercadal’s only recognised business since 2023.

The six additions were identified by Es Mercadal Town Hall under rules set by the Balearic Islands Regional Development Agency, which runs the scheme.

Six businesses added

Mobles Martí, a furniture and homeware shop, joins as a rooted business, as do craft shop ArtSpai, Carnisseria i Menjars Febrer and clothing and accessories shop Ca n’Auxili. The hardware shop Cas Llauner is recognised as rooted and historic.

Bakery and pastry shop Cas Sucrer is classed as emblematic. Under the scheme’s rules, a rooted business has a distinctive product or trade. A historic shop has been operating for more than 75 years, or exceptionally from 50 years. Businesses must also have notable heritage features and intangible value to receive the emblematic label.

Menorca total rises to 71

The six new entries bring Menorca to 71 recognised businesses across five municipalities. Maó has 29, Ciutadella 21, Ferreries 10, Es Mercadal seven and Alaior four.

Across the Balearic Islands, 412 businesses in 34 towns are now part of the scheme. The regional government says it was created to protect local trade, especially long-established shops, while showing what makes each town distinctive.
