Es Pouet water tests clear Ibiza beach for bathing

Water at Es Pouet beach on Ibiza was fit for bathing after an incident on 1 September, Sant Antoni de Portmany council said on 12 September. Tests for E. coli and enterococci, two indicators used to assess bathing-water quality, came back negative. The council said this meant there was no faecal contamination affecting the water.

Sant Antoni de Portmany did not dispute the analysis results obtained by Salvem sa Badia. However, it criticised how and where that group collected its samples.

Checks carried out on the same day by municipal services and Facsa found that the water came from the rainwater drainage network, not the sewer system. Its conductivity measured 526 microsiemens. The council said wastewater normally has minimum readings of between 3,000 and 5,000 microsiemens.

Samples were also taken in the bathing area as a precaution. Although the water had been identified as rainwater, the council said runoff can pick up pollutants on its way to the sea.
