Mallorca's es Trenc TV row: IB3 chief urged to quit
Mallorca’s es Trenc beach is at the heart of a row over a changed TV report: on 6 October, a Socialist MP calls for the head of public broadcaster IB3 to resign. The report covered a human chain formed in July to defend the natural park. IB3 director general Josep Codony told the Balearic parliament the report had been changed because he considered its original wording partisan.
Codony said the journalist who made the report had previously been press chief for MÉS per Mallorca and had interviewed only one side. Socialist MP Pilar Costa asked Balearic government minister Antònia Maria Estarellas whether she approved of what Costa called interference in the journalist’s work.
Estarellas said public-service workers should be presumed honest, regardless of past political jobs, and that such work did not limit their ability. She said she expected honesty, impartiality and public service from IB3 journalists and editors, and was convinced they delivered it. Costa then urged her to call for Codony’s resignation, accusing him of doing the opposite.
