At Es Trenc on Mallorca, the Balearic regional government plans to buy private plots for the first time and bring them into public ownership. Its president, Marga Prohens, announced the move on Tuesday, 20 October 2026, during a general policy debate. She also announced plans to buy land in Mondragó Natural Park on Mallorca.

The plans extend out to sea. The government wants to expand the protected marine area off the Serra de Tramuntana on Mallorca and add more than 2,000 hectares to the Es Freus marine reserve between Ibiza and Formentera. Prohens said the Serra de Tramuntana’s environmental value does not stop at the coast, and wider protection would allow the sea and shore to be managed together.

Prohens also pointed to approved grant schemes for preventive work by owners of forest land. Funding for grants to property owners to clear torrents is set to rise from €300,000 to €900,000. Parliamentary groups are due to respond to her speech on Wednesday.
