Palma Escoletes educators lose over €500 a month

Educators at Palma, Mallorca’s outsourced Escoletes — centres for children aged 0 to 3 — say they are now losing more than €500 a month. Unions UGT and CCOO raised the alarm on 24 September over a new city contract that remains stalled. They say the delay has left staff with seven more months of insecure work and financial losses.

The tender was meant to put agreed measures into practice, improve conditions and strengthen the service. Palma Mayor Jaime Martínez had pledged it would be running by February 2026, the unions said.

Compensation pledge still unpaid

UGT and CCOO say Palma City Council, known locally as Cort, has allowed months of delays, errors and a lack of commitment to build up. Education councillor Lourdes Roca had also promised compensation for losses caused by the hold-up, they said, but that has not happened.

The unions say the new tender should mark a shift for 0-to-3 education across the Balearics. They want the stage recognised as education, better conditions for staff and higher-quality care for children.

Appeal holds up new contract

One of the firms bidding for the contract has lodged an appeal. UGT and CCOO say they have not seen its contents, so they will not judge its arguments or challenge the company’s right to appeal.

But they warn that the appeal pushes back the start of the new contract and the improvements tied to it. They have called on Cort to get the appeal resolved quickly and say protests will resume if the tender is not settled immediately.
