Mallorca ethics lessons: MPs block bid to restore hours
Mallorca’s primary and secondary schools get no parliamentary push to restore cut ethics hours: seven PP and Vox members vote down the proposal in Palma on 5 November. Six members from PSIB, MÉS per Mallorca and the Mixed Group vote for it. PSIB member Carles Bona brought the proposal to the Balearic Parliament’s Education and Universities Committee.
The rejected measure would have asked the Balearic government to restore teaching time for Civic and Ethical Values across the Balearic Islands. Those hours were cut during the current legislative term.
MPs agree on philosophy teaching roles
Other parts of Bona’s proposal pass unanimously. The committee calls on the government to keep philosophy teachers explicitly eligible for support roles in language and social sciences. It wants that written into a planned decree on selecting teachers and filling posts in the Balearic Islands.
The committee also wants any changes to the rules linking teaching specialisms to support roles to rest on clear educational and organisational grounds, with affected teachers’ representatives involved. It asks the government to assess and publish how the new rules could affect support-post allocations, while protecting teachers already in those jobs and those applying under procedures begun before the decree takes effect.
Schools seek more help for grieving pupils
In the same meeting, the committee unanimously passes a separate proposal from PP member Ana Isabel Curtó. It calls for more training for teachers, school leaders and guidance staff to help pupils after a loss. Practical guidance would cover a child’s return to school, conversations with the child and their class, and work with families.
The proposal asks schools to consider temporary changes to tasks, deadlines and assessments when a pupil needs them. It also calls for more time for the staff involved, alongside extra support and guidance teachers, so schools can provide that help.
