Spain pitches Balearics for EU tourism data hub

The Balearic Islands, including Mallorca, could host a proposed EU tourism data hub: Spain offers the region as its site at a meeting in Mullingar, Ireland, on 5 November 2026. Spain’s Secretary of State for Tourism, Rosario Sánchez, makes the offer to fellow EU tourism ministers. The proposed European Tourism Data Space Observatory is still under consideration, so no host has been chosen.

Sánchez also presents Spain’s work on digital tools for managing tourism, including a platform for destinations, a smart tourism programme and an atlas showing where tourism is concentrated. Spain’s Ministry of Industry and Tourism says European recovery funds have financed more than 500 plans to make destinations more sustainable, modernise them and improve quality of life there.

The wider discussion matters for Mallorca too. Spain wants common tools in 2027 to help manage visitor numbers where they bunch up in particular places or at certain times of year. It is also pressing for housing to carry more weight in the EU’s tourism strategy, and for rules on short-term lets to be aligned with a planned European law on affordable housing.

For now, the observatory remains a proposal. The offer puts the Balearics forward, but does not settle where it will be based.
