Mallorca rent protest: 2,500 demand eviction ban

Mallorca: About 2,500 people rally at Plaza de Cort in Palma, Mallorca, on Monday, demanding an eviction ban and indefinite extensions to rental contracts. The crowd figure comes from the Sindicat de Llogateres de Mallorca.

The protesters call their proposed package the “Maricarmen decree”, after an elderly woman evicted in Madrid last Wednesday. Her case has sparked protests across Spain. Alongside the eviction ban and contract extensions, the Palma protesters want rent rises frozen and a change in the law to stop what they say is the misuse of temporary contracts and contracts for individual rooms.

Union spokesman Óscar Martínez wants Spain’s government to approve the full package at Tuesday’s Council of Ministers meeting, rather than pass only part of it. He says the union will keep pressing for a change in housing policy if the government falls short. The Sindicat de l’Habitatge de Palma and the Coordinadora por la Vivienda de Baleares also back the rally.
