Spain's eviction plan leaves expropriations in doubt

People are camping at Puerta del Sol in Madrid as Spain’s government works on new protection against eviction. On Monday, 28 September, Ángel Víctor Torres, the minister for Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, said talks would be intense before the draft goes to the Council of Ministers on Tuesday. He would not say whether it would allow the expropriation of homes held by so-called “vulture funds”.

Sumar and other left-wing parties want that measure included. Torres said the Ministry of Housing and other ministries were handling the talks, but declined to say where the difficulties lay.

The dispute comes after an 87-year-old woman was evicted in Madrid. Torres argued that her eviction would not have happened if PP, Vox and Junts had not blocked a decree protecting vulnerable people before the summer.

Torres said he understood the frustration of families facing housing problems. For now, the question of expropriations remains unanswered ahead of Tuesday’s cabinet meeting.
