Spain's government backs eviction protection until 2030

Spain moves to extend eviction protection until 2030: ministers approve two housing decrees in Madrid, Spain, on Tuesday, 29 September. The measures also cover rental contracts and property purchases. Work minister Yolanda Díaz and health minister Mónica García say protests helped secure the agreement.

What the housing decrees cover

The measures would regulate short-term lets and room rentals. Existing rental contracts due to end before 31 December 2028 would gain a two-year extension, while a second decree provides for automatic renewal of rental contracts. The package would also ban property purchases by so-called “vulture funds” until 2028.

Late talks, then a vote

The Cabinet meeting began an hour late after last-minute talks. Sumar had pressed for rules on room rentals and automatic contract renewals — two demands also made by the Tenants’ Union, which organised a protest camp at Puerta del Sol in Madrid.

The government has asked Congress to hold a special sitting this Friday to confirm both decrees. Until that vote, the measures are not final.
