50 rally in Palma after 87-year-old’s Madrid eviction

Around 50 people gathered outside the Spanish Government Delegation in the Balearic Islands in Palma, Mallorca, on Wednesday, 23 September. They were protesting after Maricarmen, an 87-year-old from Madrid’s Retiro district, was evicted that morning. The demonstration was called by the tenants’ union Sindicat de Llogateres.

Protesters chanted: “Maricarmen is not alone” and “Neither people without homes nor homes without people.” The union said the eviction had sparked demonstrations in more than ten cities.

It accused Spain’s central government of leaving a housing decree, announced in June, sitting unused. It also targeted PP, Vox and Junts, saying the parties voted against a moratorium on evictions and defeated an earlier decree that would have allowed rental contracts to be extended.

The tenants’ unions want the government to release the rules immediately and parliament to vote on them before the end of the legislative term. They also pointed to Sílvia’s eviction in Barcelona this week, where a suicide-risk protocol was activated, and to Olga in Hospitalet de Llobregat, who took her own life following her eviction.
