Mallorca evictions: three families stay put for now

Mallorca: Three families in Palma and Inca can stay in their homes for now after their evictions are postponed, campaigners say. One is a mother whose removal from a rented flat in the Son Gotleu district of Palma, Mallorca, was due on Friday. Stop Desnonaments Mallorca spokesman Joan Segura says courts relied on the new “Maricarmen decree”, alongside other legal arguments, to delay the evictions.

A disputed house in Inca

An eviction involving a family in Inca, Mallorca, was postponed on Wednesday. Their house had been caught in a dispute with developers and builders before Sareb took ownership, Segura says. He says Sareb will not discuss selling or renting the property to the family. They have asked Inca mayor Virgilio Moreno to intervene.

Two families in Palma

The mother in Son Gotleu lives with her two children. Segura says she paid rent for seven months, then stopped when she learnt that a claim by a former owner had led to an eviction order for the flat.

Another Palma eviction was postponed on Monday. A couple live in that home with two children, one of whom has a disability. Segura says campaigners had already stopped an eviction at the entrance to their block in July.

More cases are approaching. Segura says another eviction is scheduled for Tuesday, with others set for 13, 15 and 19 October.
