100 eye-care professionals gather in Palma for workshops
More than 100 eye-care professionals are meeting at Hospital Universitario Son Llàtzer in Palma on Friday and Saturday for a congress on caring for eye patients. The 25th meeting of the Spanish Society of Ophthalmic Nursing brings nine talks, 15 oral presentations, 16 scientific posters and eight hands-on workshops. The programme ranges from patient safety and new technology to smoother treatment pathways.
Inmaculada Sánchez, the hospital’s ophthalmology nursing supervisor and congress president, is among those opening the event. She is joined by society president Francisco Javier Gabaldón, Son Llàtzer ophthalmology chief Jaume Vila and nursing director Susana Sobrino, as well as health-service deputy care director Concepción Zaforteza and María Dolores Coheña of the Balearic Islands nurses’ association.
From cataract care to new treatments
One of the first talks examines how Son Llàtzer set up its integrated ophthalmology area. Other sessions cover cataract surgery, patients’ emotional and information needs, advanced nursing practice for injections into the eye, dry eye and the challenges posed by newer treatments such as eye gene therapy.
Son Llàtzer teams will also present their centralised PRGF-Endoret pathway in ophthalmology, care for people with Andrade disease and the work of the hospital’s intravitreal therapy unit. Scientific presentations and posters focus on safe, high-quality care, health education and the introduction of new roles and technology.
Eight small-group practical sessions
Friday afternoon is devoted to eight interactive workshops in small groups. Topics include folding lenses, cleaning and disinfecting ophthalmology equipment, video-oculography, trabecular surgery, operating-theatre sustainability, dry eye and lenses used to control childhood myopia.
The congress continues on Saturday with further posters, presentations and talks, including a project on ophthalmic nursing skills. A commemorative event marking the society’s 25 congresses, prize-giving and the official closing ceremony will end the meeting.
