A 49-year-old Italian tourist was arrested after allegedly using a fake €100 note at a shop in Es Castell, Menorca, on Tuesday afternoon. A Guardia Civil patrol from Maó went to the premises after its control room received an alert. The man was still in the shop when staff told officers he had made the payment with the note.
Officers checked the report and established the man’s identity. He was then arrested on suspicion of counterfeiting currency, the Guardia Civil said. The man was on holiday on the island, according to the force.
