Mallorca eviction halted: Palma family stays for now
A family in Palma, Mallorca, can stay in its home for now: a judge has halted an eviction set for 10.00 on Friday, 2 October. Stop Desahucios Mallorca says the order covers a flat at 44 Calle Bisbe Cabanelles. Housing rights groups had called for neighbours to gather outside the building as an urgent request to stop the eviction went through Palma’s courts.
According to Stop Desahucios Mallorca, a young man who lives in the flat needs support and has a recognised disability of 41 per cent. The group says the threat of eviction has caused him a severe health crisis. His mother has only recently returned to work after a long period of sick leave following a workplace accident and surgery.
The judge used the housing measure known as the “Maricarmen decree” to suspend the eviction for now. Named after an 87-year-old woman who was forced from her home in Madrid, it extends protection until 2030 in certain eviction cases for people who can show they are vulnerable or have nowhere else to live.
Spain’s Council of Ministers approved the decree on Tuesday. The Congress of Deputies is due to vote on it on Friday, but it is expected to fail if the PP, Vox and Junts vote against it.
