Palma family law change targets housing and daily life
Palma, Mallorca: families facing hardship could get more help with housing access and family responsibilities under an amendment approved on Wednesday, 7 October. The Balearic Parliament backed the change to the law governing Palma’s status as capital. It aims to make Palma City Council offer more support, particularly to families in vulnerable circumstances.
Agustí Buades, an independent member of parliament, brought the amendment to the parliament’s Committee on Institutional and General Affairs. He said the law had lacked provisions to protect and support families in Palma.
The amendment says city services should offer family guidance, mediation and psychological support. It also calls for programmes for children and teenagers, and specific help for large families, single-parent families and those with a dependent or disabled member. Education, health and social services authorities should work together on that support.
The text also recognises Palma City Council’s role in managing public facilities for families within the city. Other public bodies could hand over management of their facilities and services or work with the council on it. The council must also be told about grant applications from organisations supporting families in Palma.
