Palma, Mallorca, could see its ‘Far’ sculpture back in Parc de la Mar in November. Broken granite pieces forced its removal because they could come loose and hurt passers-by. Palma City Council says the restoration is in its final stage on 6 October.

The damage went beyond the broken stone. A hole had appeared in one side after a spotlight disappeared, and other faults had built up over the years.

The council has put nearly €48,000 into restoring the sculpture’s original appearance. Its creator, Josep Maria Sirvent, and the team that designed and made it are overseeing the work.

Sirvent made the iron-and-granite sculpture to resemble a lighthouse, linking it to the Mediterranean’s coasts and ports. It was unveiled in the park in 1999 for the Universiade. If the final work goes to plan, it will return to its place in November.
