Spanish farmers plan protests as farm diesel hits €1.649

Farmers and livestock keepers across Spain are set to protest after farm diesel reached 1,649 euros per litre. The farming groups Asaja, COAG and UPA announced the nationwide action in Madrid on Friday, 18 September. They say the dates and locations will follow in the coming days.

The groups say soaring fuel and fertiliser bills have cut deeply into farm incomes across every sector and region. They link the rise in costs to price increases since the start of the war in Iran, with the pressure worsening in recent months.

Fuel bill lands during key farm work

Agricultural diesel — fuel used on farms — cost 1,649 euros per litre on 7 September, according to the Ministry of Agriculture. That was 48% higher than a year earlier.

The price surge comes during sowing, the grape harvest and the maize harvest, just weeks before olive picking begins. The groups call the timing critical for the sector.

Aid ends on 30 September

Support for buying agricultural diesel is due to end on 30 September. Asaja, COAG and UPA say no public administration has yet offered a response or an alternative to soften the financial blow.

They are demanding immediate action from the relevant authorities and calling on the whole sector to join the protests.
