Farm diesel up over 80 cents: farmers plan protests

Farm diesel is up by more than 80 cents since the crisis caused by the war in Iran began, and Spain’s farmers are planning protests across the country. In Madrid, Spain, on 29 September, farmers’ association COAG says the government’s plan to extend 20 cents of relief for farm diesel is not enough. It has not ruled out a protest outside the Ministry of Agriculture in Madrid.

COAG secretary-general Andrés Góngora wants a wider package that also tackles the cost of fertilisers and agricultural plastics. He warns that some farmers may be unable to sow. That could lead to shortages of everyday food products in the medium term, he says.

COAG will set out its protest timetable in the coming days. Góngora says farmers also face problems with imports and low prices in several parts of the agricultural sector.
