Mallorca poultry farm row: inspectors find no significant problems at Avícola Son Perot’s farms during checks last week, despite a complaint to prosecutors from two animal welfare groups. Balearic Islands agriculture minister Joan Simonet gave the findings to parliament in Palma, Mallorca, on Tuesday, 27 October. Officials are still checking the video that prompted the inspections.

Video remains under review

Simonet said the first video was presented as footage from the Maribó farm. The regional government then sent inspectors to every farm in the company’s group. They found no significant problems, he said, including at Es Caparó, another farm named in the allegations.

Officials have opened a case and an investigation. Specialists are assessing whether the images are genuine, and Simonet said he would not judge the allegations before that work is done.

Planned farm draws protest

Socialist MP Malena Riudavets argued that the law on large-scale livestock farms does not prevent new ones from being built. She cited a proposed farm for 80,000 hens in Son Brau, which prompted a protest by local people at the weekend.
