Spain housing crisis: Feijóo vows a million homes

One million new homes: Spain’s opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo sets out his answer to the housing crisis in Madrid on Monday, 28 September 2026. He attacks Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s record and points to Maricarmen Abascal, 87, who was evicted last week. Sánchez’s cabinet is due to approve a housing decree on Tuesday.

An eviction and a looming decree

Speaking to the national leadership of the conservative People’s Party, Feijóo calls the government’s record “eight lost years”. He argues that Tuesday’s decree comes too late and claims that 25,000 evictions take place each year under Sánchez.

Feijóo says the housing problem will only begin to improve with a change of government. He also says he would not claim that a few cabinet measures could solve it.

Homes, land and tax cuts

Feijóo proposes building a million homes, using public land and speeding up planning procedures. He also wants incentives for affordable rentals in new developments.

For young people seeking a home, he proposes a 60% tax reduction, including a cut in property transfer tax from 10% to 4%. He says people in vulnerable circumstances should receive support while the housing crisis continues.
